Houbolt Road Extension – Girder Raising

In July 2022, Granite/Kraemer lifted a 360-foot, 1.5-million-pound structural steel bridge section to connect the north and south sections of the Houbolt Road Extension over the Des Plaines River in Joliet, IL. Over 13 hours, dozens of ironworkers and engineers used two barges and four pneumatic strand jacks to position and secure 12 girders – each 120 feet long and 12 feet high.

Houbolt Road Extension – Construction Update

Crews continue making great strides in constructing the 1.5-mile-long Houbolt Road Extension connecting the CenterPoint Intermodal Center – Joliet/Elwood, IL, and I-80. One year into the massive infrastructure project, one year to go! Among a slew of activities of late, crews have been hard at work installing stay-in-place metal deck framing on segment one on the north side of the 0.4-mile-long bridge over the Des Plaines River, and girders are arriving on-site for the main bridge span over the river.
